The third film in the theatrical SpongeBob trilogy - Sponge on the Run - has been a bit of a troubled production. The first SpongeBob movie from 2004 was a legitimately great parody of big-budget, brainless box-office blockbusters (complete with what is, unironically, one of the best musical numbers from any animated movie ever ), but its’ 11-year late follow-up Sponge Out of Water was substantially more hit or miss - allusions to the Ferguson, Missouri racial riots, notwithstanding. Īlas, SpongeBob’s track record in the full-length theatrical film department is a tad more checkered. As a matter of fact, I’d put the Al Sharpton-infuriating episode “ SpongeBob, You’re Fired ” up there with the absolute best episodes of Ren and Stimpy and Doug, if not in the same league as the cream of the crop from the golden days of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill. That, and let’s don’t act like SpongeBob, at its creative zenith, ISN’T some of the best shit that’s ever been on TV. Still, I’d rather watch SpongeBob at its most uninspired than I would lesser programs like Invader Zim or The Angry Beavers at their supposed apex.

No, the show isn’t as good as it used to be, but that’s a slight you can lob against pretty much anything that’s been on the air for 10-plus years. Well, from my vantage point, if anything, SpongeBob (as TV show, fictitious character and amorphous pop cultural cottage industry) doesn’t get enough credit for its longevity and relative quality, especially when you compare the product to such lumbering zombie I.P.s as The Simpsons and South Park.
